Meet Our Speech Pathologist Joanne Henderson-Klabe
Joanne grew up in regional NSW and moved to Newcastle to study Speech Pathology. She fell in love with the area and spent the last couple of years working as a generalist clinician in private practice.
Joanne is passionate about providing holistic services that achieve goals and facilitate results for both children and their families, in therapy and their daily lives. Joanne loves working with children and adolescents, and you can expect high energy and lots of fun in her therapy sessions.
Speech pathology keeps you on your toes. No client or family is the same, and I love having to think about what ‘hat’ I need to put on to achieve the best outcomes for a family. Not to mention research and methods always change too. How exciting!
I love that A Growing Understanding allows me to bring my own clinical style into my sessions. A Growing Understanding also allows me to nurture my clients as their speech pathologist. I am part of my clients team, and I get to really treat them that way.
Watching repeats of TV shows that I have already watched, over and over again (especially whilst sitting on my phone ee!). Or eating way too much pasta.
I have a competitive streak, so anything you have a time limit with. I’m talking Pictionary; 5-Second Rule; Articulate; Scattergories, Kahoot. I’m also not saying that I am any good at them.
I love ALL the books! But I read on repeat The Secret Garden, Pawn of Prophecy, and the first Harry Potter.
Emperor’s New Groove, or any Disney/Pixar animation pre-2010.
I love every place I’ve been, but New York, New York definitely has my heart! There’s something about standing in Central Park listening to the church bells while it snows…
“There is no reality except in action” – John Paul Satre
I was never planning on being a speech pathologist! I was well on my way to a degree in Politics and Social Justice, but here I am! That, and I absolutely cannot stand the sound of mango cores being cut. Literally have shivers just thinking about it.
Joanne's areas of interest:
Speech Sound Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Adolescent Communication Difficulties.
