Trail Talk: An Equine Experience

Neigh-bourly connections to help young people express themselves.

Connection, Communication, and Confidence – One Hoofbeat at a Time!

Step into the world of horses and nature with Trail Talk: An Equine Experience, a two-day therapeutic program designed to build communication, interaction, and social confidence in children aged 8–12 years.

Delivered in collaboration with Hunter Valley Children’s Therapy (HVCT), this unique outdoor program combines animal-assisted experiences with intentional communication support and goal-based intervention. Guided by our experienced Speech Pathologists and accredited Social Workers from HVCT, young people will explore authentic, hands-on activities that encourage teamwork, confidence, and emotional connection – all within a calm, rural setting.

The experience celebrates what we like to call “Neigh-bourly Connections” – the kind of meaningful relationships that grow when humans and horses learn to connect, trust, and understand one another. Through these shared moments, young people discover new ways to express themselves, connect with others, and build confidence from the inside out.

Surrounded by nature, participants will engage in interactions with animals, explore the property’s natural spaces (including a shallow creek for wading in warmer weather), and take part in structured activities that nurture both communication and self-awareness.

This program is NDIS approved and with the support of experienced speech pathologists, will help your child practice the following skills:

  • Expressive and receptive language skills – following instructions, sharing experiences, and describing thoughts and emotions.
  • Social communication and collaboration – connecting with peers, reading cues, and working as part of a team.
  • Self-advocacy and confidence – expressing needs, setting boundaries, and asking for support.
  • Emotional awareness and regulation – developing strategies for managing feelings and reactions.
  • Perspective-taking and empathy – understanding the experiences of others, including both people and animals.
  • Connection with nature and animals – using sensory and experiential learning to build trust and mindfulness.

Through this hands-on, nature-based experience, young people will discover how communication and connection grow through movement, curiosity, and care.
