Exploring Nature and Language

Explore the wonders of nature while growing language and communication skills.

Step Outside, Discover, and Grow Communication Skills in Nature!

Exploring Nature & Language is a full-day, outdoor program designed for children aged 4 to 7 years, facilitated by our experienced speech pathologists and held at the beautiful Hunter Wetlands Centre.

Through guided exploration and hands-on activities like dip netting, sensory discovery, and environmental observation, children will have the chance to connect with their surroundings, learn new words, and communicate about the world around them. This program encourages curiosity, conversation, and connection, all in the fresh air and open space of nature.

Parents and carers are invited to stay and participate, supporting their child as they explore, discover, and learn together.

This program is NDIS approved and with the support of experienced speech pathologists, will help your child practice the following skills:

  • Pragmatic and social communication skills – initiating and maintaining conversations related to their environment.
  • Receptive language skills – developing comprehension, reasoning, following instructions, predicting, and problem-solving through nature-based discussions.
  • Expressive language skills – expanding vocabulary, describing objects and experiences, and sharing ideas inspired by the environment.
  • Environmental vocabulary and concepts – learning new words and ideas connected to nature, animals, and outdoor exploration.
  • Confidence and communication in real-world settings – building language skills in a natural, engaging context.
  • Observation and reflection – practising listening, turn-taking, and expressive sharing during group conversations.

Together, these experiences help children strengthen their communication skills while discovering the beauty of the natural world.

Exploring Nature & Language is suitable for children aged 4–7 years and offers a full day of outdoor, nature-based fun and learning at the Hunter Wetlands Centre.

Children will explore their surroundings through guided activities, movement, and play, all designed to encourage language growth, social connection, and curiosity. Parents and carers are required to stay and participate alongside their child throughout the program.

Children should wear comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor exploration and bring a hat, water bottle, lunch, and snacks.

Please note that all group programs align with our COVID-19 Safety Plan to ensure the health and wellbeing of all attendees.
