Happy World Book Day! 🎉📙📘📗📕🎉

We could not think of anything better to celebrate than our favourite resource EVER- books!

I’m sure everyone has heard the good old “read to your child” before, but there is actually a great reason behind this. Books are one of the most easily accessible, effective ways to boost your child’s language skills.

How? (So glad you asked! 😌)

Besides being a wonderful bonding activity, books provide the perfect means for teaching your child new words/concepts (animals, colours, counting), asking questions (Where’s spot?), taking turns and expanding their sentences.

What are some things that you can do to get the most out of book time? 🤔

- choose books with lots of big, colourful pictures that will capture your little one’s attention
- don’t feel like you have to read, just talk! Instead of reading the story word for word, talk about what you can see in the pictures
- follow your child’s lead and talk about the parts that they show interest in- kids will talk a lot more about what they want to talk about!
- when books are first introduced, throw the “rules” out the window. If your little one wants to skip pages, turn it upside down, start from the end- it’s all good! We want books to be fun!
- start making books part of your bedtime routine- it’s a great way to wind down and get little minds ready for sleep
- if your child is not showing interest in books, choose some “interactive” books that they can engage with (e.g. lift the flap, feel the fluff and bumps, press the button)

Some of our personal favourite interactive books are pictured below ⬇️

So get busy all our little bookworms! 🐛

This week, I have been spending some time talking to families about ‘offering choices’ to children that keep interactions going and to reduce protests. This is a good summary about why offering choices can be helpful and how to do it! ~ LaurenThe importance of offering controlled choices 🙂 ... See MoreSee Less

🌳👨‍✈️👨‍🚒👨‍🍳 An amazing 25 happy children joined us for ‘Stories Under the Tree’ this morning! With so many bubbly, inquisitive kiddies today, we took the opportunity to discuss the stories in more detail - we used the pictures to make predictions about the story, discussed who/what/when/where and why questions relating to the plot and related our own personal experiences to the stories. These are all simple ways that you can enrich shared book experiences with your child to further nurture their language development.
Join us next month on Wednesday, 8th May for our next gathering for ‘Stories Under the Tree’ - I think I’ll need to bring an extra picnic rug! ~Melissa :-)
